A nine-year-old Dalit boy, Indra Kumar Meghwal, from Surana village, in the state of Rajasthan, India was brutally murdered. The Dalit’s are heavily discriminated against in Hindu caste ridden India and perpetuators are seldom prosecuted and in fact given special treatment by Indian courts. The boy allegedly drank water from the pot of his teacher, Chail Singh, a high caste member of the Rajput Hindu community. Indra was viciously beaten by the teacher on July 20 at the private school which is owned by Chail himself. The child was initially admitted to a hospital in Udaipur and was later transferred to the state hospital in Ahmedabad, where he succumbed to his injuries and died on Saturday August 13th.
The deceased boy’s uncle Kishore Kumar Meghwa informs that the accused and the Rajputs of the village tried to silence the downtrodden community by threat of withdrawing education and offer of bribes. Kishore stated “A few days ago, there was a gathering of around 40 people from the Rajput, Dewasi and Meghwal communities at the school. The Rajputs told us not to register a case since our children still study at the school. They told us to reach a compromise with the teacher. The teacher gave us Rs 1.5 lakh (150,000) in two installments and said he was ready to pay another lakh (100,000) for Indra’s treatment."
